Most dietary fats naturally come as triglycerides, meaning three fatty acids attached to a glycerol backbone. Before your body can absorb EPA and DHA, digestion must break them down into smaller units called monoglycerides. MAG-O3® skips this step. The omega-3s already arrive in monoglyceride form, exactly the structure your small intestine absorbs directly.
Conventional fish oils typically come in triglyceride (TG), ethyl ester (EE), or re-esterified triglyceride (rTG) forms. All require bile and pancreatic enzymes for digestion before absorption. In a published pharmacokinetic study (Chevalier et al., J Nutr 2021), monoglyceride omega-3 delivered approximately 3x more blood EPA + DHA than ethyl esters, and approximately 2x more than rTG forms at the same dose. The difference is the molecular form, not the dose.
Most fish oils rely heavily on fat-containing meals for absorption because they require bile for digestion. MAG-O3® is self-emulsifying and already in absorbable monoglyceride form. We still recommend taking it with meals for consistency, but MAG-O3® was designed to perform reliably even with lighter meals.
In the IO3-03 comparative study (NCT04159532), MAG-O3® at 1.3 g EPA + DHA per day reached the 8% Omega-3 Index threshold in 8 weeks. Results vary depending on your starting index, diet, and dosage. Many practitioners combine MAG-O3® with an at-home Omega-3 Index test to establish a baseline and monitor progress at 8 and 12 weeks.
Adult dosage ranges from 2 to 5 softgels daily, while adolescents aged 12–17 generally take 2 softgels daily.
A common protocol is:
